The New Commandment

⁷ Beloved, I am writing you ^(A)no new commandment, but ^(B)an old commandment ^(C)that you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word that you have heard. ⁸ At the same time, it is ^(D)a new commandment that I am writing to you, which is true in him and in you, because^{[a] (E)}the darkness is passing away and ^(F)the true light is already shining. ⁹ Whoever says he is in the light and ^(G)hates his brother is still in darkness. ¹⁰ Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in him^[b] there is no ^(H)cause for stumbling. ¹¹ But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and ^(I)walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

Do Not Love the World

^15 (P)Do not love the world or the things in the world. ^(Q)If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. ¹⁶ For all that is in the world—^(R)the desires of the flesh and ^(S)the desires of the eyes and pride of life^[c]—is not from the Father but is from the world. ¹⁷ And ^(T)the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

Warning Concerning Antichrists

¹⁸ Children, ^(U)it is the last hour, and as you have heard that ^(V)antichrist is coming, so now ^(W)many antichrists have come. ^(X)Therefore we know that it is the last hour. ^19 (Y)They went out from us, but they were not of us; for ^(Z)if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, ^(AA)that it might become plain that they all are not of us. ²⁰ But you have been ^(AB)anointed by ^(AC)the Holy One, and ^(AD)you all have knowledge.^{[d] 21} I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth. ²² Who is the liar but ^(AE)he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is ^(AF)the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. ^23 (AG)No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also. ²⁴ Let ^(AH)what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then ^(AI)you too will abide in the Son and in the Father. ²⁵ And this is the promise that he made to us^[e]—^(AJ)eternal life.

²⁶ I write these things to you about ^(AK)those who are trying to deceive you. ²⁷ But ^(AL)the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and ^(AM)you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and ^(AN)is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him.

Children of God

²⁸ And now, little children, abide in him, so that ^(AO)when he appears ^(AP)we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his ^(AQ)coming. ²⁹ If you know that ^(AR)he is righteous, you may be sure that ^(AS)everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him.

Job's Confession and Repentance

42 Then Job answered the Lord and said:

The Lord Rebukes Job's Friends

⁷ After the Lord had spoken these words to Job, the Lord said to Eliphaz ^(F)the Temanite: “My anger burns against you and against your two friends, for you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has. ⁸ Now therefore take ^(G)seven bulls and seven rams and go to my servant Job and ^(H)offer up a burnt offering for yourselves. And my servant Job shall ^(I)pray for you, for I will accept his prayer not to deal with you according to your folly. For you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has.” ^9 (J)So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went and did what the Lord had told them, and the Lord accepted Job's prayer.

The Lord Restores Job's Fortunes

¹⁰ And the Lord ^(K)restored the fortunes of Job, when he had prayed for his friends. And the Lord gave Job ^(L)twice as much as he had before. ¹¹ Then came to him all his ^(M)brothers and sisters and all who had ^(N)known him before, and ate bread with him in his house. And they ^(O)showed him sympathy and comforted him for all the evil^[b] that the Lord had brought upon him. And each of them gave him ^(P)a piece of money^[c] and ^(Q)a ring of gold.

¹² And the Lord blessed ^(R)the latter days of Job more than his beginning. And he had ^(S)14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 yoke of oxen, and 1,000 female donkeys. ¹³ He had also ^(T)seven sons and three daughters. ¹⁴ And he called the name of the first daughter Jemimah, and the name of the second Keziah, and the name of the third Keren-happuch. ¹⁵ And in all the land there were no women so beautiful as Job's daughters. And their father gave them an inheritance ^(U)among their brothers. ¹⁶ And after this Job lived 140 years, and ^(V)saw his sons, and his sons' sons, four generations. ¹⁷ And Job died, an old man, and ^(W)full of days.

The Triumphal Entry

11 ^(A)Now when they drew near to Jerusalem, to ^(B)Bethphage and Bethany, at ^(C)the Mount of Olives, Jesus^[a] sent ^(D)two of his disciples ² and said to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately as you enter it you will find a colt tied, ^(E)on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it. ³ If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of it and will send it back here immediately.’” ⁴ And they went away and found a colt tied at a door outside in the street, and they untied it. ⁵ And some of those standing there said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” ⁶ And they told them what Jesus had said, and they let them go. ⁷ And they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it, and he sat on it. ⁸ And many ^(F)spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. ⁹ And those who went before and those who followed were shouting, ^(G)“Hosanna! ^(H)Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! ¹⁰ Blessed is ^(I)the coming ^(J)kingdom of ^(K)our father ^(L)David! ^(M)Hosanna ^(N)in the highest!”

^11 (O)And he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple. And when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, ^(P)he went out to Bethany with the twelve.

Jesus Curses the Fig Tree

^12 (Q)On the following day, when they came from Bethany, ^(R)he was hungry. ^13 (S)And seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to see if he could find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for ^(T)it was not the season for figs. ¹⁴ And he said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard it.

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

^15 (U)And they came to Jerusalem. And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold and those who bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of ^(V)the money-changers and the seats of those who sold ^(W)pigeons. ¹⁶ And he would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple. ¹⁷ And he was teaching them and saying to them, “Is it not written, ^(X)‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But ^(Y)you have made it a den of robbers.” ¹⁸ And the chief priests and the scribes heard it and ^(Z)were seeking a way to destroy him, for they feared him, because ^(AA)all the crowd was astonished at his teaching. ^19 (AB)And when evening came they^[b] went out of the city.

The Lesson from the Withered Fig Tree

^20 (AC)As they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away to its roots. ²¹ And Peter remembered and said to him, ^(AD)“Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered.” ²² And Jesus answered them, “Have ^(AE)faith in God. ^23 (AF)Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ^(AG)‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not ^(AH)doubt in his heart, but ^(AI)believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. ²⁴ Therefore I tell you, ^(AJ)whatever you ask in prayer, ^(AK)believe that you ^(AL)have received^[c] it, and it will be yours. ²⁵ And whenever ^(AM)you stand praying, ^(AN)forgive, ^(AO)if you have anything against anyone, so that ^(AP)your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”^[d]
